UNite to Combat Climate Change

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th in over 100 countries world wide. The 2009 theme is climate change and more importantly what societies can do in response. Combating climate change is a major issue for everyone, so every individual effort, no matter how small, can contribute to the fight against climate change. Today, individuals, non-government organisations, community groups, business have organised activities to renew their commitments to protect the environment. So if you haven’t organised anything there are many activities in your area that you can participate in from clean-up campaigns to tree planting or simply just check out the the daily do something tips. Happy W.E.D, let’s make 2009 the year we combat climate change together!

Climaterally, it’s in your hands!

Last Sunday, May 17th 2009, over 5000 schools kids, families, friends, communities and organisations gathered  to form a great big Human Sign on St. Kilda beach in Melbourne. There are many people of late that are very unhappy with the lack of government action towards combating climate change.  So it is great to see when a group of individuals, young and old, unite over the same concern, Climate Change. By the way, this years message, CLIMATE CHANGE - OUR FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS, was submitted by an 11-year old student, Sophie Dickinson, who along with her school helped to create this human message to the government. Click here to see more pics from the event.

FlexiCar

Whilst researching public transport options, besides the expensive taxi, I came across this brilliant company, Flexicar. Flexicar is a pay-as-you-go service,  an affordable and convenient alternative to taxis, car rentals and car pooling. Members can choose to use a flexicar only when necessary, 24/7, allowing you to drive only when you need to. Finally an environmentally friendly transport solution. There are cars readily available on most main roads throughout  Melbourne  and  Sydney. Once you are a member it’s simple, book online (at least 1 minute before), swipe your Flexicard and off you drive. And you can even hire a car by the hour, including petrol. Join, Click, Swipe and Drive. Save money and help save the environment.

Ripple Products recently worked with WSP Online to formalise our existing design and procurement policies. What a great learning experience for the Ripple team. The knowledge and expertise within the framework of WSP has been extremely worthwhile. A big thanks to WSP!

E-cycling old electronics

Technology these days is evolving at a ridiculously rapid rate. Whilst this is great, what happens to all the old school computers and worn out TV’s? The big problem with e-waste is that it contains too many toxic materials, that if aren’t disposed of correctly will end up in landfill leaching out into groundwater, contaminating our soil and water systems. These toxic materials should never make it into landfill - such mercury, lead, cadmium, and fire retardants to name a few. We all have unwanted old dinosaurs collecting dust, but how and where to dispose of them responsibly? Firstly check to see if the manufacturer offers a take-back program. If not, there are other options. 1800 E Waste will pick up and remove any unwanted electrical products from your home or office, ensuring that 98% of the product is diverted from landfill. Another great option available is Recycling Near You, a fantastic website that allows you to search local recycling centers either by area or product.

A Guide to Ethical Supermarket Shopping

With every dollar that we spend we can all make positive changes in the way we shop and have an impact on our planet. Recently, our Managing Director, Tracy brought this little green book (literally) into the office. We all couldn’t believe some of the Companies that were criticised. There is a bit on boycottsworkshops and also supermarket tours. We are a big fan of spreading this type of message here at Ripple. So make sure you go out and get one and start making a difference, by making every dollar you spend count!

2008 Save Water Save Energy Expo

Last week Ripple Products was one of the many innovative companies to participate in the annual Save Water Save Energy Expo, held in Melbourne at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Coinciding perfectly with National Water Week, the Save Water Save Energy Expo definitely lived up to its name by showcasing the latest water and energy conservation products, services and solutions available on the market. We were all delighted here at Ripple Products to see our shower timer range displayed in the Sustainability Victoria Resource Smart’s bathroom. All in all the Expo was very well received, demonstrating to its visitors how easily we can all save water and energy.
